The Justice Department released a statement October 12, warning several sanctuary cities who are allegedly not in compliance with federal immigration law statute 8 U.S.C. 1373. This is another hostile move by the administration toward immigrants.

Cities who the DOJ include are Chicago, Illinois; New Orleans, Louisiana; New York, New York; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These cities have until Oct. 27, 2017 to provide evidence that the interpretation and application of their laws, policies, or practices comply with the statute.

The Trump administration has sent aletter to NYC saying they must prove they are not a sanctuary city by Oct. 27, 2017, or the administration will halt federal funding. New York’s Bill de Blasio and Chicago’s Rahm Emanuel, have publicly defied federal instructions to turn in undocumented immigrants.In response to the letter, De Blasio said “We are fully in compliance with the law… if president Trump stops our funding for the NYPD, we will see the president in court. It’s as simple as that.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in the DOJ statement “Jurisdictions that adopt so-called ‘sanctuary policies’ also adopt the view that the protection of criminal aliens is more important than the protection of law-abiding citizens and of the rule of law”.

Sanctuary cities strengthen ties between law enforcement and the immigrant community. The administration is cracking down on both legal and illegal immigration. As these changes in immigration law occur, it is important to stay calm, and consult a certified attorney if you have any questions.
